The Family of God

One of the first observations I made when coming to Grace, was that the church felt like a big family. Now, I know that every church is supposed to be the family of God, but the truth is that many just don’t fit that description. Yes, they love the Lord and may even be a good church overall, but for one reason or a thousand reasons, they just don’t have the feel of a family.
Over the last several weeks the Grace family has been through its fair share of heartache with the loss of one its founding members and the loss of one its newest members. And the one thing that was blatantly obvious was that this church is a family. Through it all, we sang hymns together, we cooked meals together, we shared memories together, we hoped together, we cried together, and by the power of the Holy Spirit we prayed together.
And it is those prayers that I want to focus on in this month’s Pastor’s Notes. All through the weeks with John and Meredith, I was able to detect a tangible and growing sense of brotherly Christian love within our family as we all united together in prayer for the same purpose. It highlights the biblical principle I was recently reminded of in one of my devotionals… that when we earnestly pray together for the sake of others, we are all praying in concert with the Holy Spirit, which means we are praying according to God’s will (1 John 5:14). That harmony with the divine will of God draws our hearts and our minds further and further from our own personal concerns and places us at the foot of His throne. That is the “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3), that you can’t buy from a store, or get from the latest Christian Fad, or Program. It is the gift of the Spirit that I’m sure inspired the Gaithers to write…
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.
I’m so glad I’m a part of the Family of God,
I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the family, The Family of God.
